eels tours / Re: Best recent tour? (Possible spoilers)

i didn't catch eels in 2010 but i did in 2011+2013. it was a great concert both times, don't get me wrong, but i felt that 2013 was too similar to 2011. the formula wasn't shaken up enough from 2011; so 2011, by default.

again, great concert both times, so i'm not seriously complaining.

the intro to 'wonderful glorious', sans vocals. as simple as it is, i could listen to it for a hell of a lot longer than it runs.

Seeing Bobby Jr. on some of the merchandise during the tour made me wonder... What's up with Bobby Jr? He used to be a big part of the Eels' universe. With this new album no word of him. Is Bobby still alive?

he is. in W,G interviews e mentioned that bobby jr just had some kind of surgery done since the last album but he was all good now.

you'll know when bobby jr dies because there will be an entire album about it.

my favorite part other than those people losing it are the handful of people on eels' facebook page who were like "I HATE WHEN BANDS TAKE POLITICAL STANCES. I HATE EELS NOW. RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE" and so on

Yeah. Conservatives are often deep in the pockets of corporate interests, which of course often happen to be the exact opposite of what the average American wants/deserves/thinks. And with corporate interests comes massive cash, hence a huge platform for mouthing off and being dicks. Grrrr. The shitty side of capitalism.

there's a side to capitalism that isn't? *slide whistle*

this year has been bonnie prince billy, eels, and tegan & sara. it's only march. i have frightened rabbit and iceage to look forward to in the next month or so. also maybe white lung. it's been a great concert year so far

yeah, that was a really good live song when i saw eels in 2011.

it just occurred to me that the setlist is slightly incorrect, because i definitely remember hearing that look you give that guy

13
oh lord how could i forget to mention the opener, nicole atkins. i had never heard of her before, but she was stunning live, she had a great big booming voice. probably the best unfamiliar-to-me opening act of any concert i've been to in the last year or two.

"neptune city" is a beautiful song, definitely try that one.

oh, also, while i was searching 'eels' on twitter that night to find better pictures, i found someone who posted a twitpic with me in it. i'm in the lower left part with the grey hoodie, and you can see the side of my glasses. probably the only picture that will exist that shows E and i in the same room, ever

Encore:
Brave Little Soldier
My Beloved Monster / Mr. E's Beautiful Blues

Encore 2:
Fresh Blood

Encore 3:
Open My Present
Go EELS!

the 3rd encore happened after the house lights came on, and most people left. i was not present, because i was tired and wanted to go home. i found out about the encore by searching "eels" on twitter that night to find better photographs than i was able to take with my old cell phone. someone tweeted something to the effect of "eels are doing another encore after the house lights went up and most people left. this is great". i felt like an idiot for leaving - if you're seeing them this tour, stay after the house lights come up.

so we heard at least one song from every eels album but end times and tomorrow morning. would've been nice to hear even a song from those, but i heard "climbing to the moon" so everything else was just a bonus. the renewing of 'vows' between chet and E was really funny, if you don't know what i mean you can just look around on youtube.

the thing that was unique about my show was that it was on oscar night, and E said early on in the show (paraphrasing) "i know you all must really like us, because you're here on oscar night. we're from the hollywood area and this is like their christmas over there. we'll keep giving you oscar updates throughout the night, so don't worry, you can put your phones away, we've got you covered". after every couple of songs, E would take a piece of paper from the sound guy sitting at the side of the stage and read a new 'announcement' from it.

he must have done at least 8-10 of these jokes, but since it's a couple of days later i can only paraphrase about 3 of them. they were actually very funny:

1 - best actor in a leading role: pauly shore in: the army 2: still in the army
2 - best supporting actor: the dog from the artist
3 - ...i honestly forget the set-up to the punchline, but the punchline was "angry birds: the movie" which made me laugh a lot.

my cell phone pictures, not great quality but i liked the image i took of chet and E renewing their 'vows': http://imgur.com/a/2bls9

my recording of 'climbing to the moon': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FyzCaQjA4_M .

related thought: it was very jarring going from climbing to the moon immediately into peach blossom.

overall, it was just as great and entertaining of a show as when i saw them in 2011. i wish i could have seen eels prior to the last couple of years, but it's still definitely worth going. then again i'm talking to people on the only active eels message board, so i think i'm preaching to the choir (or do we all hate him again, i didn't get the last memo).
