You make a good point about what E was listening to there - nowadays it's easy to access pretty much everything that's released due to the internet. It must have been incredibly difficult and time consuming to keep up with the new underground scenes back then, time which E spent hunched over his drumkit and then fourtrack.

The book's quite revealing about E's songwriting process, especially in this period.....guess I won't spoil it for you  ;)

I don't think it's about Susan......going from when he mentions her in the book (a few times, though not in much detail) it seems like they've always been friends since they broke up, something which seems unlikely if E had a "get over it, I didn't break your heart" kind of attitude. Even if the song was written fairly early on, around 1998 or something, E still seemed to be getting on with Susan at the time of release of 'Susan's House'.

What I Have To Offer

What I have to offer, it is a lot
now all the world's saying, look at all I've got
all the world is saying, I look OK
I got good manners and I ....

And you know that I'm all full of love
For you

What I have to offer, it is so much
I care and need your really tender touch
I got a pleasing disposition
And I don't care about football professionals

And you know that I'm all full of love
for you

What I have to offer, we'll check it out
I've learned some things and I know what it's about
I'm quite Sicilian  :D  and I'm pretty smart
takes an awful lot to break my heart

But you know that I'm so full of love
For you

This is what I heard:

Millcent don't blame yourself, sweetheart there's no one else
more important to me than you
There's nothing that you need to do
To prove that you care
I know you do

Millcent just let them talk, 'cause they say it's a lot (doesn't make much sense, I know...)
no one's gonna make that untrue
There's nothing anyone can do
To change the way I feel about you
You know it's true

Millcent, just hang on
I know that I can be
Everything you need me to be
There's no wall that I can't crash through
There's nothing that I wouldn't do
for you

Millcent don't blame yourself
sweetheart there's no one else in the world

Also, I'm pretty sure it's Millicent and not Millcent.

Yeah, it sounded like E just picked people out who had their hand up. Fuck, I really wish I'd been able to go.

Shame about the quality though. Will this be the format of the tour, just E with guitar a piano? I wouldn't mind if it is, after the last two tours I'd like to see him play his songs in this simplistic, stripped down way.

Agreed.....even if 'Meet the Eels' is just supposed to be sales-oriented, cultivating longer-term fans would surely bring in more money eventually. Casual fans who buy 'Meet the Eels' might just say "Oh yeah, I remember some of these from the radio ages ago" and be happy with that, whereas a greater spectrum and better choices of songs would make people buy more albums and turn up to a show or two. That said, I suppose it's difficult to judge a best of compilation when you're already mega fans like we are.....the only way to judge how effective it is is to hand it to someone with little or no knowledge of the band.

The bit about E's wife in his book is interesting and might answer this question, depending on how you interpret it......guess I shouldn't post any spoilers though.

It's right on the back page after the main text, in the little "About the Author" paragraph.

I actually thought it started off a bit disjointedly. The first chapter could be a bit more coherent, and possibly listed as the prologue instead of chapter one. A great read though, it's really renewed my enthusiasm for E's work after not listening for a while. I can definitely understand some songs a lot more now. My favourite quote is where he mentions his run-in with John Legend: "A real legend doesn't have to name himself one. Or act like a twat"  :D

His description of the Royal Albert Hall show at the end is really super, especially since I was there on the front row gawking back at him. I'd forgotten about his guitar strap breaking......now I'm mega excited to see them from the front row again next month.

I used to be pretty nifty at cricket....played for my school and that, but these days I'm proably distinctly less nifty. Who knows.

Who else thinks that nifty is a much under-used word?
