Oh goody!

Unlike most people on this board (it seems to me), I love this album.  I love the dodgy pics in the liner notes as well!  E with rifle in hand and legs/dress of girl visible on floor - so funny/disturbing... magic stuff!

I love it, as well! Two weak tracks but besides them a very great record.
You should edit out the quotation bit out of your ratings, I could get confused when I do the average score thingy ;D

Wasn't it the guardian that reviewed HL and said it was like a grungy man's crotch or something like that?  I had been away from eels for a while at the time, and I remember reading this and thinking 'this sounds like my kind of record' hee hee! ;)
 
Eventually got around to buying it at Christmas last year for hubby, and we both loved it to bits.  Then End Times came out and I got into that etc etc.   Then became more obsessed than I have ever been about any musician!  And I am way old enough to know 'better'. ;D

I could never understand the love "The Longing" received when this record was initially released, and after many more listens I still don't click with it at all. I find "Ordinary Man" to be one of the dullest Eels album finale's as well (admittedly, any album closer has big shoes to fill as the previous ones have been pretty much perfect). However, I do think there is some great work on this album. In particular, I think "In My Dreams" is one of the sweetest songs E has written, and "That Look You Give That Guy" is a gem of a song.

A pretty decent album, all told. But The Longing always gets skipped, and things trail off dramatically after My Timing Is Off.

Fresh Blood, Tremendous Dynamite and The Look You Give That Guy are excellent.

Contrary to many of you, I find "In my dreams" relatively weak... Lilac breeze is the worst to me, just some deafening song...
For "That look...", the song is really excellent but the intro sounds close to Richard Cocciante's "coup de soleil"

Woah! That is uncannily similar. I always thought it was one of E's most inventive and original chord sequences as well.

Makes me wish to hear a version of "That Look YOu Give That Guy" in which E sings the lyrics in french, accent and all.

I agree this album loses its way towards the end, and Ordinary Man and The Longing are just dull and forgettable. Love My timing is Off and That Look best.
